Pintor francés. Ingresó a la École des Beaux-Arts en 1846.Se adjudicó el premio de Roma en 1850. A su regreso de Italia, en 1854, se convirtió en un exitoso defensor de la pintura académica y participó en la exclusión de los impresionistas (
ver impresionismo) radicales del Salón Oficial. Trabajando con un estilo tranquilo y de finas terminaciones, pintó obras religiosas sentimentales, desnudos tímidamente eróticos, escenas alegóricas y retratos realistas. En 1876 fue designado miembro de la Academia de Bellas Artes. Su influencia se sintió ampliamente, en especial en EE.UU.
